Longtime advocate for SC’s LGBTQ+ community passes away

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The woman known as the Mother of South Carolina Pride, Mama Harriet, has died.
Wednesday night, the Harriet Hancock Center announced the passing of Harriet Daniels Hancock, the center’s namesake.
Hancock, an attorney and advocate, established a local chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays after her son came out to her in the early 1980s.
According to the Harriet Hancock Center, she helped gather the organizers who planned South Carolina’s first Pride March in 1990.
She also helped establish the center, which is located on Woodrow Street in Columbia.
In a press release, the center stated Hancock’s family said those wishing to honor her memory are invited to make a gift to the Harriet Hancock Center.
