Columbia Couple Brings World into Focus for Thousands

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (WOLO) – A husband and wife optometry team based in Blythewood are putting their skills and goodwill to use, bringing eye care to thousands who would otherwise go without.

The couple, who owns Advanced Family Eye Care in Blythewood and Camden, have been volunteering overseas for nine years now, but last year, they decided to take things a step further. They created eCommerce site, Eye Love, last year, where they sell their custom-designed sunglasses to raise money for their charity work.

“It just hooks you in,” Dr. Jenna Zigler, owner of Eye Love and Advanced Family Eye Care said. “You see so many happy people from what you’ve done.”

In October, Jenna and her husband, Dr. Travis Zigler, headed to Jamaica, where along with ten other doctors, they treated about 2,000 people in just four-and-a-half days. Treatments included check-ups, eye pressure tests and cataract removal. Free prescription glasses were given to those people who needed them. Everyone got a free pair of sunglasses.

“There are a lot of people here in South Carolina that need help, too,” Travis said.

Their Camden clinic partners with a clinic to provide free service to diabetes patients. So far, they estimate Eye Love has helped as many as 5.000 people.

“Whether it’s out clinic here, or in Jamaica it’s going to improve their life immensely,” Jenna said.
